Sky Queen Slots
The Maya civilization has, in some form, always occupied our minds. Just like ancient Egypt, it is a civilization that has since disappeared. They leave behind indecipherable texts and massive structures; in short, a mystery. And if there’s one thing humans love, it’s to solve a mystery. And if you crack Playtech’s code, you’ll be rewarded with a great jackpot, too! Sky Queen is played on a 5x3 board with 50 fixed paylines. This slot has two special features. The first are the Fire Blaze Re-spins, which feel like they’re in almost every recent Playtech game we’ve played. The second is a rather barebones free spins bonus. The only reason it stands out is because you can win the re-spins while it’s active.
How to PlayWe were floored with how nice the visuals look! The background image does all the heavy lifting here. It honestly looks a bit surreal, with something emitting a bright glow. Exactly what, we don’t have a clue, as it’s hidden behind the reels! It looks beautiful in conjunction with the well preserved Mayan ruins. Fantastic work by the developers! You play this release on a 5-reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. To win, players must collect three or more identical icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow one of the currently active paylines, or else the cash prize won’t be awarded.
Betting Options and PayoutAs always, Playtech stays ahead of the pack in many things, setting your total bet included! The process is as simple as tapping the plus and minus key until you find the wager you’re happy with. The betting spread is absolutely massive, too! Your minimum stake is $0.25, which is great value for 50 paylines. Meanwhile, high rollers can sink $500 per spin! Sky Queen has a medium-high variance, with an RTP of 96.5%, which is above the current industry average. The jackpot is a satisfying 2,000x your total stake, awarded from the Fire Blaze Re-spin special feature. Difficult to win, but more than worth the trouble if you can pull it off!
Symbols and Extra FeaturesHonestly, symbol designs felt very weak. The animals and statues looked pretty cool, we’re not going to lie. But the playing card royals really had no place in a slot like this. Especially without any extra décor to help it blend in with the more thematically fitting icons. Collect three or more Scatters in any position to win eight free spins. If you find three or more Scatters again while the bonus is still active, you win 8 more free spins. And yes, you can win the re-spins while extra turns are being played. Sun symbols appear on the board with an attached cash prize. If more than six appear at the same time, they activate the Fire Blaze Re-spins. Gamblers get three re-spins, and the counter resets each time a new sun lands. Jackpot Stars can also land, and if they do, players will win one of three fixed jackpots. For the grand jackpot, you need a full screen of Suns.
Our VerdictWe like the graphics for the most part, but the gameplay feels very similar to everything else Playtech launched. The re-spins are a great mechanic, but maybe it’s time to take a small break from them.
