Vikings Go to Egypt

Vikings are famous as great explorers and adventurers and are remembered for pushing the boundaries of the kinds of trouble they could get into in their own time. However, Yggdrasil sure loves pushing them into even more outlandish destinations. So far, the “Vikings Go” series that kicked off with Vikings Go Wild, has seen the merry band of raiders go to Hell, Valhalla and, of course, Berserk.

The latest entry brings together two seemingly innocuous themes as far as online slots are concerned – Vikings and Ancient Egypt. The premise itself takes a bit of time travel but hey, it’s a fun creative liberty. Especially since Yggdrasil is so good at bringing their imagined worlds to life. Indeed, like most Yggdrasil-made games, the visuals and presentation of Vikings Go to Egypt is absolutely on point. Vikings Go to Hell was probably more impressive, but this game contains scenes in which the cast of established characters clashes with Cleopatra herself. We thought the little animations were really well done and brought the whole experience up a notch.

However, clashes between characters with game-impacting results are what this series is famous for. The Hell edition was, in fact, centred around it. So what does this sequel bring to the table that earlier iterations didn’t?

The answer is, sadly – not much. The central features in this game are all about the Vikings going berserk and fighting locals to turn into Wilds if they win. All of these mechanics are copied from earlier Yggdrasil games, right down do the free spins.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though. We’ll continue our Vikings Go to Egypt: Wild Fight review by going through the various features and gameplay elements that make up the game.

The base game is a standard 5×4 board featuring 25 fixed paylines. To win, you need to hit 3 or more matching symbols along a payline going from left to right, starting with the leftmost symbols.

Vikings Go to Egypt uses a coin-per-payline system for stakes, starting at $0.01 per line. In other words, accepted bets range from $0.25 to $125 per spin.

During the base game, special Chest symbols can appear on the fourth or fifth reel. Chests are automatically collected and can award instant payouts or free spins.

Gold chests grant bigger rewards than silver ones, up to 21 free spins or a 400x instant win. The chests also have additional potential prizes during free spins, such as extra spins, extra Wilds, or turning entire reels into Wilds.

Players can choose to start betting just a penny per payline, for a small wager of $0.25 per spin. Those that have higher casino budgets can easily increase this amount to a maximum of $5 per line offering a chance to bet $125 per spin. While this may not be high enough to appeal to high rollers, it does provide low- and mid-rollers with decent options.

However, the game’s math model is easily its biggest weakness. 94% is far below average in the industry and much lower than earlier “Vikings Go To…” games which all sat around 96%.

Given how important RTP is for any slot game, this stat alone is pretty much a deal-breaker. Especially considering the fact that Vikings Go to Egypt doesn’t bring anything truly new to the table.

Vikings Go to Egypt by Yggdrasil is about as feature-heavy as all of the slots in this series, so this is where we get into the real meat of the game.

Free Spins

You can trigger the Free Spins mode by hitting 3, 4, or 5 scatters anywhere on the board for 7. 14, or 21 free spins, respectively. You can also win them using chests as described above.

Every time you trigger free spins, you also get to pick additional bonuses from a blind selection of hidden chests. These give you the chance to get additional spins or various other bonuses such as initial sticky Wilds.

One of the most recognisable features of Vikings Go to Egypt is the Viking Wild Fight feature. Whenever one of the high-paying Viking characters appears on the board, it fights Cleopatra. If the Viking wins, a sticky Wild is created in its position which stays around until the end of the bonus round.

Ragnarok Free spins are a special mode that can only be won through Golden Chests or during the bonus round bonus pick. It works the same as regular free spins, but all Vikings are Berserk.

Berserk Vikings

Every winning instance of a Viking symbol fills the respective Viking’s Berserk meter, which you can see on the left. This bar carries over between spins, letting you build it up as you play.

Once the bar fills, the Viking in question goes berserk. Berserk Vikings always beat Cleopatra, so they always create Sticky Wilds.

Feature Buy

You can trigger free spins at any moment by clicking the Feature Buy button. This option costs 40x the bet for 7 spins, 14 free spins for 120x the bet, or 21 free spins for 260x the bet.
