Shogun of Time Slots
Cyberpunk and eastern Asia are a combination that just works. Given how all-encompassing corporations can be in those countries, it’s the perfect place to set a futuristic dystopia. The only way to fix things is to use the technology of these big companies against them. In Microgaming’s latest venture, we travel through time to save the world and snag some prizes! Shogun of Time is played on a 4x3 board, with a total of 81 ways to win. Score four-of-a-kind wins in succession and there’s a chance a Reel Split re-spin triggers. This creates a fifth reel for a single re-spin and increases the number of ways to win to 243. If you want to play like this for more than just a single spin, you’ll need to trigger free spins.
How to PlayCredit where it’s due, this slot looks gorgeous! We’re huge suckers when it comes to cyberpunk stuff, and this game radiates that theme. Animations also look quite cool. Seeing the background light up is nice, as are the cool effects that play when a re-spin is triggered. The Microgaming release is played on a 4-reel board, where each reel is three symbols tall. Instead of using paylines, Shogun of Time uses a ways to win system. That means for a win to count, they only need to collect three or more identical icons, in adjacent positions.
Betting Options and PayoutPlayers can bet anywhere between $0.10 and $100 on each spin, which makes for a fantastic betting spread. It gives both casual gamblers and high rollers a chance to find their ideal wager. To change your bet, click the coin button and scroll up or down to find your stake. After you select it, just press the Spin button and you’re good to go. This slot has a medium variance and an RTP of 96.02%, which is the current industry average. The game has a maximum prize of 2,717x your total stake. Coming anywhere close to that jackpot requires you to get just a littlelucky with the special feature.
Symbols and Extra FeaturesSymbol designs are easily the best part of this game’s graphics. The playing card royals are, unfortunately, every bit as dull as they always are. But we really like how all these old-timey icons are actually digital recreations. This mix between old technology and new virtual stuff is really cool to look at. Land four-of-a-kind wins in succession and you have a chance of trigger a re-spin. Keyword here is chance: it’s not guaranteed. But if you do get it, you get an extra fifth reel, and the number of paylines increases. During the re-spin, only the fifth reel actually spins. The other four stays the same. Meanwhile, collecting three or four Rose Scatters in any position will win you 8 or 16 free spins, respectively. During free spins, the fifth reel is permanently active and there are 243 ways to win active instead of 81. The added middle reel is stacked Wild and all paylines pay both ways instead of just paying left to right.
Our VerdictThe graphics are awesome, but the gameplay is offensively bad. Who thought it was a good idea to take out the fifth reel, and then re-add it as a promotion? Shogun of Time had a great deal of potential, but it failed to live up to it. Better luck next time, Microgaming.
