Rich Wilde and the Tome of Dead

Rich Wilde is back! Play’n GO released Rich Wilde and the Tome of Dead, a new 5×5 cluster pay slot that continues the legacy of Rich Wilde. To be fair, we did a double take when we first saw the game title as it reminded us heavily of the Book of Dead. The first thought was that it was a simple remaster of the legendary slot, but it’s not: it’s a game in its own right.

Using bits and pieces from previous Rich Wilde games, the Tome of Dead is a 5×5 cluster slot with medium volatility, 96.21% RTP, and 5,000x wins. Features used in the slot remind us of Tome of Insanity, probably because of the All-Seeing Eyes that summon Wilds and Multipliers to the grid. Besides All-Seeing Eyes, the game features Wilds, four different Rituals, and Free Spins.

Tome of Dead opens to a startling intro from Ammit the Devourer, which then leads you to the official game setting: a mysterious chamber presumably deep inside the pyramids. It’s an Egyptian slot, much like Book of Dead and a couple of other Wilde slots, so there’s nothing special to say about the game’s looks.

Right off the bat, you will see a 5×5 grid with a couple of interesting UI additions. First, there is a meter that counts winning icons (more on that later) and a grid that shows where All-Seeing Eyes are placed on the grid. Both of these are special game features of which we’ll talk more in the next sections.

To play, you need to first place a bet and then click on the Spin button.

To set a bet, you can select the bet amount in the bottom bet bar by clicking on – and + signs. The lowest you can bet on a round is $0.10 while the maximum is $100 per round.

A useful functionality can be the Autoplay which allows you to automate your spins. You can select between 10 and 100 Spins, the bet amount, and a few other rules by finding and clicking on the Autoplay button that is right to the Spin button.

The smallest bet possible in the game is $0.10 per spin. On the other hand, you can stake up to $100 per spin as the maximum bet. Be careful, though, as the game has a medium level of volatility paired with a 96.21% RTP. This is the optimal RTP rate, but there are four other alternatives that are less favorable (94.2%, 91.2%, 87.2%, 84.2%).

The game’s maximum win capacity is 5,000x the stake.

Regular payouts differentiate between low-rank and high-rank icons. Lower-rank icons are urns with shapes of Egyptian gods paying 0.10x to 0.40x for the smallest clusters of 4. If you manage to create clusters with 10+ icons, the payouts will range from 3x to 6x.

High-value symbols are the Ankh, Scarab beetle, Anubis, and the Pharaoh. These pay 0.80x-2x or 4-symbol clusters, while 10+ symbols pay from 25x to 100x, respectively.

Winning symbols create winning cascades, as winning symbols are removed to make room for new icons from above.

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Dead has Wilds, All-Seeing Eyes, Rituals and the Banishment Free Spin.

Wilds

Wilds in the game replace all icons in the game. There are three types of Wilds: Alter Wilds, Multiplier Wilds, and Ammit the Devourer Wilds.

Alter Wilds trigger ritual effects. The Multiplier Wilds trigger Multipliers with them, which can be 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x. In the Free Spin, the Multipliers are even higher – 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x.

When you have more than one Multiplier Wild, only the highest one is applied, but if there is a Multiplier Wild and one Ammit the Devourer Wild, their values will be multiplied.

Ammit the Devourer Wild is a 2×2 walking wild that walks thrice on the grid.

All-Seeing Eyes

All-Seeing Eyes are secret symbols that are lay beneath symbols on the grid. Opening one in the base game  by landing a win atop its position will add 2-4 Alter Wilds to the grid. In the Banishment Free Spins, you may have 12 normal and 6 special All-Seeing Eyes active.

When you enter Free Spins, All-Seeing Eyes that are opened will summon Ammit the Devourer Wilds with Multipliers.

Rituals

Rituals are game modifiers are triggered once the Ritual Meter is filled. There are four Rituals that are unlocked sequentially.

• Protection
• Devour
• Judgement
• Banishment

With 8 winning symbols, the meter is charged and rewards you the Protection Ritual, which adds 2-4 Alter Wilds to the grid.

After 16 charges, The Devour is awarded. With this Ritual, you get 2-4 Alter Wilds and diagonally positioned symbols are destroyed, awarding wins  and boosting the meter charges further.

Once you get to 30 charges, you will unlock Judgement, which adds 2-4 Alter Wilds and upgrades the low-rank icons to high-rank (one randomly chosen symbol type is upgraded only). When you finally charge the meter fully to 48 charges, you unlock the Banishment Free Spin.

Banishment Free Spin

It’s the same as the Tome of Insanity: you get one Free Spin where are Rituals are unlocked one by one. They can also overcharge, so you might get more Rituals – up to 7. The Spin lasts until you have Rituals to play out, and once all Rituals are played out, the spin ends.

Even though desktop gameplay is super fun and easy, we recommend trying the game on mobile. It’s easy and there is little to no change to the game controls and UI. The order of the settings and buttons is slightly rearranged, but it’s nothing drastic.

The sound and features are obviously all the same.

If you want to play on mobile, you have two choices: play using browsers or download a mobile app (of possible). The choice won’t really affect the mobile experience in the game, but you can choose which one you enjoy more based on personal preference.

Theme, Visuals & Sound

It’s an Egyptian slot. We feel like we must lead with that as it explains many of the artistic and design choices that were made in Tome of Dead. Frankly, we were a little surprised that the new Rich Wilde game is another Egyptian slot, because Play’n GO had a nice run of exotic destinations that were diversifying the slot series a lot.

But it was time to get back to the roots, and what better way than by creating a game that is similar to most other Egyptian slots? It’s well made, for sure, and the soundtrack suits the theme to a T. However, it’s nothing special to write home about, so we are waiting for the next Rich Wilde slot to blow everything out of the water with innovation and a fresh new location (and new design and looks perchance?).

Our Experience Playing Tome of Dead

We liked it but it is far from inventing the wheel.

It’s an Egyptian slot, so it’s bound to have Egyptian gods as the main statues and icons, as well as the famous sandy pyramids as the setting. It’s a nice game, don’t get us wrong.

It’s just that both visually and gameplay-wise we felt like it was more about recycling than creating something new and fresh.

An odd choice for Play’n GO, then. It’s clearly an easy way out, because they did release a game that fits the famous slot franchise, so it’s probably going to be loved, but it also has a lot of potential. And Play’n GO can do much more than this, as well all know.
