Yggdrasil Gaming’s DoubleMax mechanics first appeared in 2021 with Raptor DoubleMax. Back when it first came out, it introduced one of the most potent multiplier features in slot gaming – a win multiplier that literally doubles with every cascade win.

Since then, the mechanic has been used in a number of games, most notably Neon Villains DOubleMax. And now, four years later, Yggdrasil decided to return to prehistoric times with Raptor 2 DoubleMax. In other words, it’s taking you back to its origins.

If you are ready to back to an earlier era when lizards ruled the earth and humans were merely a twinkle in evolution’s eye, you will immediately get into Raptor 2’s 5×3 grid with 243 ways to win. However, as the game progresses, you will both collect the multiplier and then potentially see the grid expand (up to 5×7).

The math model is highly volatile with an almost unheard-of 97% top RTP, though lower return values exist. Check which one you are getting before you play.

Raptor 2 uses an expanding ways to win system that begins at 5×3 with 243 ways. With special features, it can reach 5×7 with 16,807 ways, especially during free spins.

Wins form when matching symbols fall on adjacent reels from left to right. And after each win, the game’s titular feature DoubleMax activates.

DoubleMax is a multiplier booster. So, after all winning symbols are removed, a wild symbol is added to one of the winning positions and then new symbols drop down. But every avalanche win increases the DoubleMax Multiplier. In the base game, the multiplier starts at 1x and resets after a losing avalanche or spin.

But during free spins, the multiplier starts at 1x and keeps growing throughout the entire feature without resetting. The maximum value is 2048x, which theoretically you may win but it might take a while. Don’t strive to hit that, though. You might run into a dry streak like that, which is not good.

Theme & Design

Raptor 2 is a dinosaur-themed game, so it’s no wonder dinosaurs are the stars of the grid.

Visually, it’s quite interesting. First of all, you are introduced to a dense, glowing jungle environment instantly making an immersive atmosphere. The dinosaur icons that showcase on the grid are well-rendered and distinct, capturing both the danger and sheer power of this prehistoric animals.

When the grid expands during free spins, symbols do become slightly smaller but the overall graphics quality remains excellent throughout the session.

The soundtrack complements the prehistoric setting too, and it does not overwhelm gameplay in any case.

RTP & Volatility

Raptor 2 offers an exceptional 97% RTP at its highest configuration.

However, three lower return models exist (down to 94%), so always check which version your casino offers before playing.

The 97% configuration makes Raptor 2 mathematically very attractive, but it might not be the used version at every casino.

The high volatility means substantial swings and potentially long dry spells between significant wins. So, even though the game has a fantastic RTP, it’s still smart to be careful with bet sizes.

Base game hit frequency is approximately 25-30%, providing wins every 3-4 spins on average, though most are small. Free spins trigger approximately every 200-300 spins through organic play, with Reel Expansion occurring roughly 1 in 8 free spin rounds.

Avalanche

Avalanches or cascades are mechanics allowing you to create multiple consecutive wins on a spin, After each winning combination forms, the winning symbols are removed from the grid.

But before new symbols drop onto the grid, a single wild is added to the grid on a random position.

New icons then cascade to fill empty positions. The cascade keeps happening as long as there are opportunities to form winning combos on the grid.

DoubleMax Multiplier

The DoubleMax Multiplier is, as you have already seen, Raptor 2’s main feature. Every avalanche win doubles the multiplier value.

In the base game, the multiplier starts at 1x. With every new win, it doubles. It looks like this: 2x, 4x, 8x, 18x, 32x, 64x, 128x, 256x, 512x, 1024x, and lastly 2048x. The 2048x is the highest possible Multiplier.

At the end of the spin, the value resets. It does not reset in Free Spins, though.

Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols triggers free spins with variable starting conditions. The number of scatters determines the number of spins and the size of the grid (and consequently number of ways).

Here’s how that works. Get 3,4, or 5 Scatters and get 5 free spins on a 5×3 grid with 243 ways,  15 free spins on a 5×5 grid with 3,125 ways, or 15 free spins on a 5×7 grid with 16,807 ways, respectively.

During free spins, landing 3 or more scatters triggers the Reel Expansion feature. If the current grid has fewer than 7 rows, +2 additional rows are added to the grid each time the feature triggers, up to the maximum 5×7 size. Landing exactly 5 scatters during the feature awards +1 additional free spin along with any Reel Expansion that occurs.

Our Experience Playing Raptor 2

Raptor 2 has two assets that work in its favor: the theme and the DoubleMax mechanics.

By far the most important asset is the multiplier system. It gives you a lot of opportunities to score wins, as multipliers can reach up to 2048x.

But it requires patience. There’s high volatility, which means long stretches between significant wins, and avalanche sequences are not always substantial enough to build meaningful multipliers. The DoubleMax resets after each spin in base game, which further limits opportunities to experience its full power outside free spins.

Free spins is where Raptor 2 shines. But getting there takes even more patience, or money as you can buy spins). We don’t recommend Feature Buy, because it both costs money and it might not be valid in all markets.

All in all, a solid release. It could always be better, but we are satisfied with Raptor 2 overall.
