Originally released in 2012, Microgaming’s Immortal Romance slot is celebrated as one of the most popular and influential casino games of the online casino era. On top of being a thought-out game with engaging features and a favourable math model, it introduced a new element to slot games that is take for granted these days: storylines. Not just themes and graphics, mind you – actual plots that have an effect on how the game works and progresses.

Since then, Microgaming has been succeeded by Games Global. The game itself received a sequel, spin-offs, and even a scratch card variant. While successful in their own right, none of these offers managed to reach the heights of the first game. With that in mind, it makes sense that Games Global opted to create a simple remaster. The idea is to just lift the original features outright while giving the game a facelift and a modern interface.

When we first got our hands on the remastered version, we thought we would just be looking at the same game with new graphics. It would be a lazy solution but hey – don’t fix it if it ain’t broke, right?

For better or worse, though, the game seems to also have brought some changes to the math model. We’ll examine these in detail in our review and see whether they’re an actual improvement or a massive step back.

The base gameplay of Immortal Romance Remastered is identical to most online slot machines.

Just set the size of your stake and hit ‘spin’ when you’re ready. The game is played on 6 reels and 3 rows with no fixed paylines. In other words, all you have to do is match 3 or more winning symbols on 3 or more adjacent reels, starting with the leftmost reel. This adds up to 243 ways to win, which is a fairly common layout.

It’s worth noting that yes, the graphics did receive an update, but the differences are mostly minor. The new Games Global interface is definitely a huge improvement, though, and we’re glad it was implemented.

More importantly, the game’s legendary soundtrack is still here. ‘Legendary’ is not an understatement, either – very few other slot games ever released a full gothic pop album, complete with full vocals and frankly catchy tunes. It’s all there to support a detailed plotline about genetic research, vampires, and dark desires. It’s all great fun, especially if you’re a fan of IPs like Twilight or True Blood.

Despite having no fixed paylines, players still bet on a coin-per-payline basis that’s probably a holdover from earlier Microgaming titles.

This means that the minimum bet in Immortal Romance Remastered is $0.30, which is a bit on the high end all things considered. The maximum wager clocks in at $30, which is not exactly impressive either.

On the bright side, payouts in this game go up to a respectable 12,150x your stake, which is a tidy amount. Of course, you would have to trigger multiple features to get there, but it’s entirely possible thanks to the game’s mid-level volatility.

Immortal Romance Remastered’s RTP goes up to 96.86%, which is quite high. That said, we assume that this is only true if you have all four bonus types unlocked since higher-level bonus rounds are clearly better. If you haven’t progressed the story at all, the RTP clocks in at around 96.10%.

One of the most famous features of Immortal Romance is the bonus round or, specifically, the four bonus rounds. Each of these is tied to a specific character, all of which come with detailed backstories. The more you play, the more tidbits of information you unlock, which is quite neat as it gives an interesting incentive to keep playing.

Hitting 3 or more Scatter symbols triggers the bonus round. Initially, you only get to pick one of these – Amber’s. Subsequent activations allow you to also pick an additional option until you unlock all four. Note that you generally need to trigger free spins four separate times before unlocking the next character.

All four bonus rounds come with varying numbers of free spins and an additional special feature. These options include:

• Amber – 10 free spins with a 5x win multiplier. Retriggers are possible.
• Troy – 15 free spins. Special Vampire Bat that randomly turns symbols into 2x or 3x multipliers.
• Michael – 20 free spins with tumbling symbols. Each tumble adds a +1x win multiplier to subsequent wins.
• Sarah – 25 free spins with Wild Vines, which randomly turn other symbols into Wilds. Retriggers possible.

Every time you hit a bonus, a short cutscene plays revealing a new snippet of the storyline.

On top of all that, Wilds in Immortal Romance Remastered have special mechanics. First of all, they double any payout they’re a part of. Secondly, the Wild Desire feature can randomly trigger on any spin and turn entire reels into Wilds.
