Gold King Slots

The story of King Midas is a cautionary tale that dates back from the time of the Ancient Greeks. In it, the king, yearning for wealth, wished that everything he touched became gold. He got his wish, though it wasn’t as glamorous as he had hoped it would be and it culminated with him losing everything he had ever loved, including his daughter, who turned into a statue of gold. Praying for release, he was told to wash his hands in the river Pactolus by Dionysus, god of wine, and from that day, the river was rich in gold, which led to his dynasty growing wealthy and powerful. It’s a good lesson for all gamblers to learn, really. Don’t go overboard when you’re betting! Gold King offers players a playing field with 5 reels and 20 paylines, alongside several fun special features. A random symbol can be chosen to super stack on the reels. On top of that, reels one, three and five can randomly be filled with super stacks, and this happens relatively often, though it isn’t always a win. And on top of that, there’s always a lucrative free spins waiting for you when you least expect it.

How to Play

The user interface in the Play’n Go release is well done. Everything is clearly marked and visible, and the animations are simple, but fluid and highlight the action spectacularly. The backdrop of a pile of golden coins certainly fits the theme of wanting more and more, although we’re slightly disappointed the symbols didn’t convey a similar message. Apart from his rocking beard made out of literal gold, King Midas doesn’t seem particularly afflicted by his condition, which does miss the mark of the story, but we can understand why the developers chose to focus on the lots of gold part of the story. As for gameplay, Gold King is a feature-heavy game with a lot of bonuses that come up quite often. Free spins were somewhat elusive for us while we were playing, but the super stacking and golden spins occurred in every ten to fifteen spins, though they aren’t guaranteed wins, and even when they are, there’s always the chance it’s built with lower paying symbols. In equal measure, Wilds don’t seem to be very common outside of free spins. We’re comfortable calling this slot high volatility, but once it gets rolling, it's quite difficult to stop.

Betting Options and Payout

You can play Gold King for as little as $0.20 up to $100 per spin. And while Play’n Go are covering all their bases and accommodating every type of player, no doubt you’re wondering if it’s worth to dive into the pile of treasure in the backdrop. It does depend on your patience to get the free spins to activate, of course, but beyond that, the game is very heavily geared towards getting five-of-a-kind wins for any serious profit. Looking at the paytable, it can be downright hilarious how small some wins are even for higher paying icons, but to contrast this, you get those sort of small wins very often on the 20 payline playing field, and they rack up pretty quickly.

Symbols and Extra Features

With a name like Gold King, you know what the main theme of the whole thing is going to be. Golden roses, golden crowns, gemstones in golden rings and valuable golden bars alongside poker card symbols that are made out of silver and lined with gold. Truly, it’s good to be the King, especially if you have enough gold to cover your entire beard with it. Free spins are activated in a relatively familiar manner – by landing three or more Scatters. While the extra turns are active, Super Spins also are nearly guaranteed to happen on each spin. Winning additional Scatters gives more free spins, allowing you to extend it for much longer than the initial 10 free spins you are given.

Our Verdict

When it’s all said and done, Gold King doesn’t do that well as a cautionary tale against greed because it’s so fun to play and win prizes in it that you can’t help yourself but go for one more spin each time. It feels smooth, the pays are good, and with a bit of luck, you can score an awesome jackpot. But while you’re riding the big wins, don’t forget that King Midas is ultimately a cautionary tale, lest you lose all your profit in the aftermath.
