The way the company announced the info on the Gambling and Games advertising policy page was short but effective. There was only a single sentence: “Examples of games that are not social casino games: Sweepstakes casinos”.

It was major, because it finally closed the old loophole that had allowed sweepstakes operators to advertise as social platforms. From now on, sweepstake operators will face the same advertising restrictions applied to licensed gambling companies. And those are far more difficult and stringent than for social platforms.

A Better Divide Between Social and Classic Gambling

Under Google’s definition, social casino games are merely a simulation of gambling titles, such as poker, roulette, or slots. However, no real money or prizes can be won playing these games.

Sweepstakes casinos, however, are a different thing. They use a dual-currency system that allows players to redeem prizes with real value. That small distinction now brings them officially under the online gambling umbrella. In other words, they are treated the same as any other kind of real-money casinos, bookmakers, lotteries, and betting sites.

The company also emphasized that advertisers “must comply with local laws” in all targeted markets and uphold responsible gambling standards. This shift formally aligns Google’s internal policy with broader regulatory trends across the United States.

Little Room for Operators for Changes

To get Google’s certification for advertising social casino games, the list of requirements is simple.

The games must not offer prizes of real-world value, must not target minors, and must include disclaimers confirming that no real money gambling is involved.

Sweepstakes casinos no longer meet these conditions because they use the dual currency system, and consequently, prizes that are redeemable for cash.

The move will likely affect not only operators but also game suppliers. Developers who distribute software to sweepstakes platforms may now risk breaching Google’s ad standards. This echoes recent market actions, including Pragmatic Play’s withdrawal from the U.S. sweepstakes market and Evolution’s commitment to offer products only in fully compliant jurisdictions.

What This Means for the Players

For players, this means they’ll be seeing fewer sweepstakes casino ads across Google Search, YouTube, and other similar networks. Promotions that are formulated as “free social games” will likely be removed or get age restrictions.

But for operators the consequences are more serious. To continue advertising on Google, they must now qualify for online gambling certification. That means they’ll need local licenses and compliance with jurisdictional laws.

But because most sweepstakes brands operate outside traditional licensing frameworks, they will lose their access to Google Ads.

Regulatory Changes Continue

The timing of Google’s update is not coincidental.

The sweepstakes casino sector is already tightening regulation across USA. California also recently became the sixth state this year to ban dual-currency sweepstakes casinos, while several others have taken enforcement actions to remove operators.

At the same time, more than 80 lawsuits have been filed against leading sweepstakes platforms, some even targeting celebrity endorsers such as the famous rapper Drake.

In the UK, the UKGC is busy introducing numerous guidelines for protecting players. It seems that change in on the horizon, and it’s one that will guard players against gambling harms.
