The movie, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ continues to be enjoyed by many since its inception in 1939. The book that the film was based on was written by L. Frank Baum. His birthplace was the village of Chittenango, NY, which now shares the location of the Yellow Brick Road Casino. The Oneida Indian nation decided to pay homage to the writer of this masterpiece. Refurbishing a decidedly under used strip mall is bringing jobs and an economic boom to this semi-rural village. The Oneida Nation already owns and operates the Turning Stone Casino and Resort. This has become a top tourist attraction in New York State.
The 67,000 square foot venue opened to throngs waiting in line. There were actually a few people spending the night before wanting to be the first on their favorite slot machines. Besides the options of 430 slots, there is also a 500 seat Bingo hall for gaming pleasure. Yellow brick floors and carpeting awash with poppies create the illusion of being somewhere over the rainbow. The twenty million dollar investment is now contributing new employment for 250 people. Entertainers in OZ themed costumes joined others for the opening celebration. One lucky guest will be the first to enter the Cyclone of Cash. There they will have a number of seconds to grab cash strewn about inside this windy enclosure. In keeping with the themed promotion, a drone appearing to be a witch on a broomstick will be flying around at select locations within Central New York.
The casino differs greatly from the resort type of the Turning Stone. A much smaller venture; it is suited to the gaming enthusiasts looking for a quick and easy stop. There are no hotel rooms, but there are amenities other than just the gambling floors. Dorothy’s Farmhouse and Wicked Good Pizza will provide themed selections for dining. The Winged Monkey carries this premise in delivering out-of-this-world cocktails. A country western style bar, the Heart and Courage Saloon adds to the wonder of the inspiring story behind this undertaking. The casino shows promise as a fun and convenient stop for many.
